Keb darge northern soul

Postby Zolorisar В» 08.10.2019

Again on 1-11-1941 he was honorably discharged.

When the "first wave" of the scene ended late in the decade, his musical journey and career as a record collector, trendsetter and DJ began in earnest, and it continues today with slots across Europe, the States, Japan and more recently Beirut, Tel Aviv and Rio de Janero; indeed any city where a lust for old music can be found.

As a nine or year-old I would hang out my bedroom window and I could hear the likes of The Beatles, the Stones and Small Faces play there.

And I'd be fascinated watching these motorbikes turn up from Aberdeen, Inverness, Glasgow. The club was started by this guy, an Italian gangster in fact, called Albert Bonici.

It's said he had to disappear from London and he materialised in my town and, through his connections I suppose, would put these bands on. I think he died last year. Well, I was a teenager, and very unworldly but I was interested in girls, and I was also a taekwondo boy. My mates Mick and Pete went up to the DJ, handed him some records. Then this slightly different music came on, and they started doing all these really energetic moves and the girls were transfixed… and so what drew me to Wigan was the opportunity to dance and impress girls, the music didn't matter.

I didn't start buying records until We'd go out in say Dundee on the Friday then down to Wigan for the Saturday all-nighter, then find a Sunday all-dayer, like the Manchester Ritz. But there were tons of clubs. For a while we'd go the Mecca [in Blackpool] until closing at 2am, then head for Wigan — no distance at all if you've come down from Scotland. Full coaches would head down to the north of England from Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness, Stirling, oh aye, guys would be hitchhiking and everything.

A huge exodus. Then the Casino had an area on the dance floor called Scots corner. But there was no real interest in Glasgow. Folk came from Southampton, Bournemouth, even St Ives.

But very few guys from London. It was a very hedonistic scene, purely based around the music. People forget how awful life was in the 70s for the majority, excluding the 10 per cent who went to university. But it didn't matter really, 'cos you got your wages and there's always Friday, Saturday, Sunday coming.

There was no alcohol on sale at any of the all-nighters, and I don't think at the all-dayers. There were other forms, shall we say, of stimulant, to keep you going. All you could buy were soft drinks and meat potato pies! One source in the 70s and 80s was John Anderson, he was the biggest dealer of northern soul and had a warehouse here and in the States. He must have had money as he was buying up warehouse collections in the America and even defunct radio stations as another way of getting records.

He also supplied me with a lot of funk stuff in the 90s. The other source was the Wigan Casino. The record bar was about the size of this room [we're in a moderately spacious back bar of a pub]. And you could get unknowns there. Dealers hanging around going, "Pssst, here buy this before it goes big". It's yours for a dollar". So you have to be very rich to buy obscure soul now.

Did soul fans identify or express concern with the experience of black people in the States? Absolutely none at all, that's another fallacy. It was purely about the music and anyway half the records were by white artists. Wigan became the focal centre. Levine came from a wealthy Blackpool family whose father owned the whole seafront and he was buying rare 60s soul from an early age on family holidays to Florida. The other clubs would hire Levine to get the crowds in but Russ Winstanley [who ran the Wigan Casino] wouldn't.

They hated each other. Later Levine went to New York and got into the whole disco scene which he bought back to the Mecca.

No but I moved down to Wigan in ' I was the bar manager at the Grand Hotel on Dorning Street and then I was given the night club to run at the side of the hotel before the Casino opened up at midnight. Yes, but I stopped going before that. Russ Winstanley started playing all the rubbish of the day even getting Tony Hatch [composer of the Crossroads theme tune] to make tailor-made tunes to play in the club, pretending it was American-made soul.

Meanwhile Wigan started its "Oldies" night around , which just repeated the 60s soul we'd heard for the first time a few years before. The club was packed but I found it really dull. In Searling played what was probably the best northern soul set ever - all unheard killer 60s stuff - and I thought, "Great, this is really exciting," but that buzz got crushed by this insistence on packing the floor with familiar tunes.

Another thing that helped kill Wigan was the Granada documentary [This Is England] made around because it attracted a public who weren't really into the music, just into the hype.

And Winstanley just pandered to this. I met a DJ called Guy Hennigan in and between us we bought what was probably the best collection of 60s "newies" [undiscovered records] off a chap called Dave Withers. Then me and Guy began playing at Stafford, which basically took over from Wigan, though much of the old crowd were gone. But by there was a proper newies scene with there were allnighters everywhere.

In I got divorced and sold all my northern records. Then one day and a kid next door came around with a cassette tape of funk that blew me away. I said, "Where did a little tyke like you get records like that? The rare groove scene had just finished, the awful house scene was happening, and I just thought the rare groove guys have just scraped the surface, there's a huge quarry of unknown stuff, so I started playing funk at the Brain every Saturday night.

Then the funk thing really took hold when they were booked to take the Brain Club to Iceland and they asked me to do play in Tokyo — which they thought wasn't cool then. My first foreign booking! So I'm playing this three-floor club called Gold, with house and various nonsense on the main floor, even worse on the top floor and me in the middle.

While I'm playing, and I'm not lying, lining up behind one deck are these Japanese girls wanting my phone number so I could teach them English, and behind the other deck are "otaku" [a person with obsessive interests]. So I stayed for six months. They were nuts for it, to people on the dancefloor. This was and it took off because our second night, unbeknownst to me, Stanley Kubrick was filming Eyes Wide Shut there.

Dave Swindells, the Time Out clubs editor, owed me some coverage in the magazine and by chance he sent along his reporter that night.

She saw Kubrick, saw Tom Cruise and convinced them to stay a while, then in the next edition of Time Out it's: "Keb Darge's secret underground scene! And the same time I met the guys from BBE Barely Breaking Even, a London record label and he asked if I wanted to do a compilation, I hesitated at first, then accepted on the condition that it was called Keb Darge's Deep Funk, so that none of the big DJs at the time could claim my hard won discoveries as their own.

So the Deep Funk was every Sunday. He raved about the Deep Funk compilation, amazed at how I got hold of these records from his own country that he'd never heard of. No advertising, just word of mouth. So having superstar DJs just appearing really boosted it.

Well I'd been collecting rockabilly the mids and I loved it and I'd drop a few in at the end of a Deep Funk night but clear the floor. I was still doing northern weekenders in places like Bournemouth and these places started booking rockabilly bands but I thought it would never cross over.

Loved it, far more exciting than playing funk to boring collectors. Women liked it and the atmosphere was fun. Women tend to listen more honestly - if something sounds good they dance, regardless of rarity. Andy Smith [associated with Portishead] was also hired as a famous name. Then I moved to the Philippines four years ago and was DJing in Japan but I wasn't getting bookings in Kobe, which is the cool town just outside Osaka.

I found out they were crazy for northern soul and I'd sold most of it. So, rather than chasing the obvious stuff everyone else was, I went for the white, more violent-sounding northern soul that got played at Wigan that everyone's forgotten about, which I soon learned from American dealers is called garage.

I thought here we go again! Dancing is still big there so I'm really excited about that. That should see me through now until I die.

Describe your first musical awakening And how did you stumble upon northern soul music? What drew me to Wigan was the opportunity to dance and impress girls Keb Darge. So describe a typical weekend of clubbing in the 70s How did you find soul 45s? How did the Wigan Casino affect the northern soul scene? Did you play at the Casino? The Casino closed in So what did you do next? And what killed that night? Boredom with the music and a lack of discoveries.

Then you started to play an entirely different genre of music This night ran its course as well? Northern Soul success: A new film brings a very British club culture back to life Best not to sneeze in strangers' faces Northern Soul review: A ropey plot but fantastic soundtrack.

Dealers hanging around going, "Pssst, here buy this before it goes big". I went home and listened. Took us a couple of days to get there, but when I saw all the relief goods on sale in giant supermarkets I went on an internet campaign to try and make the foreign governments aware. It makes me more happy than playing for people who are really into it. My first foreign booking! Had he not been forced to the ground by a volcano eruption, this interview might not ever have taken place. So describe a typical weekend of clubbing in the 70s

Viewing All Keb Darge. Eilon had been aware of Keb Darge through his funk compilations, and at the age of 27 while living in Israel, a cheap ticket became eoul to London. By the time we reached I began to dislike most of the new tunes, they were becoming too over produced, and cheesy for me.
